Hardwood Floor Maintenance

Preventative Maintenance:

  • Use protective mats at all exterior entrances.
  • Vacuum or sweep the floor regularly to remove dust, grit and dirt. Warning: Vacuums with a beater bar or power rotary brush head can damage the wood floor and should never be used.
  • Remove spills promptly using a clean damp cloth.
  • Use felt protectors under chairs and heavy pieces of furniture. (Available at most home centers).
  • Footwear should be periodically checked for wear.
    • Special Note:
Spike or stiletto high heels, especially those in need of repair, may cause denting and related damage to hardwood floors due to extremely high compressive force they generate. Such footwear can produce dynamic loads in excess of 1,000 pounds per square inch. Permanent indentation may result.
  • To extend the beauty of the hardwood flooring, close drapes or blinds during hours of direct sunlight. Excessive sunlight can cause discoloration.
  • Keep animals nails trimmed to prevent damage to the floor.
  • Protect the floor when using a dolly for moving furniture or appliances. Never slide or roll heavy furniture or appliances across the floor.

Regular care:
Hardwood flooring with a urethane coating requires no waxing. When the appearance of the floor becomes dulled by the effects of soil, simply use Hardwood Floor Cleaner and a special flooring terry cloth mop available from most home stores.

Steps for Cleaning
1. Vacuum or sweep the floor to remove any particles that could scratch the floor.
2. Apply hardwood Floor Cleaner directly to the terry cloth covered flooring mop. Do not spray directly onto floor.
3. Use a back and forth motion with the mop. When the terry cloth cover becomes soiled, simply replace it with a clean one. Cleaning the floor with a soiled cover may cause streaking or scratching. The covers are reusable by washing and drying as you would to any towel.

Precautions: Vacuums with a beater bar or power rotary brush can damage a floor and should never be used.Never wet or damp mop hardwood floors. Water can cause damage to wood flooring.Never use oil soaps, liquid detergent, or any household floor cleaning products containing wax or acrylic. If the floor becomes scratched or dull, recoating or refinishing can be a solution. Contact Cooper Floors for more information 714-979-7888 or CooperFloors@aol.com
